Incayuda: Another Hand That Helps

Incayuda’s mission is helping international communities lift themselves out of poverty and thrive, by overcoming multiple challenges impeding progress as well as encouraging independence and collaboration in problem-solving.

The goal: Instill hope, confidence, and a sense of collaboration to communities via construction projects and program development.

How We Do It

Incayuda provides a hand-up by teaching people to help themselves, and supporting grassroots organizing and improvement efforts by using available local, regional, and international resources. Incayuda's first projects started in both the Carabayllo district of Peru (outside the capital city of Lima) and in Sector 9, within Basilio Auqui Huachipa in Lurigancho-Chosica. A community assessment indicated the needs were great. Despite challenging circumstances, a group of local mothers in both these communities had taken it upon themselves to manage a supplemental milk program for their youngsters. In 2011-2012 Incayuda built on these self-directed efforts by empowering the neighborhoods to make improvements to the buildings housing the "Glass of Milk" programs. These "bricks and mortar" projects opened minds to the benefits of self-reliance and self-sufficiency.

Director Sammy Torres followed up in 2012-2013, taking the construction projects to the next level by assisting these communities in pursuing their goals: filling the walls with activities. In addition to jumpstarting Carabayllo's youth music program by providing instruments and instructors, Incayuda helped the women of Carabayllo and Sector 9 initiate sewing and knitting programs to teach skills, and foster small businesses to better support their families. Incayuda provided a sewing machines, supplies, fabric, knitting needles and yarn and supplied direction for these startup projects.

Incayuda continues to support communities by framing visions and encouraging the progression of ideas to reality.
